Price saying G1 prayers for Pedrena

Mick Price's chance of adding a fifth Group 1 win to his season's tally rest with classy mare Pedrena, and from all accounts she's on track for Saturday's $500,000 Tatts Tiara at Doomben.

At Caulfield on Tuesday, Price said he was impressed with what he'd heard of the Stakes winner's work in Queensland that morning in the lead-up to the final Group 1 of the season.

The four-year-old was ridden by jockey Jim Byrne, but the Caulfield horseman confirmed that young gun Michael Dee retains the ride in the weekend's feature as Pedrena strives for her first victory at the highest level.

"It is a Group 1 and she's against mares and she's going really well so this is a bit of a cross-fingers job for her," said Price.

"We'll say a few prayers just see what happens."

The Tatts Tiara will be the daughter of Mossman's fourth race in a campaign that included a Group 3-win at Doomben two starts ago, before a disappointing showing on the Heavy surface last start in the G2 Dane Ripper.

"Look it's a little bit of a tougher race, she is one of those good mares you know right time, right place, right barrier everything working well she's going to run well, very happy with her," he added.

"She straightened up the other day on that Doomben track and Michael just said 'Look, she just didn't handle the really choppy ground'."

Price is confident the $60,000 purchase is in with a real chance on Saturday, as long as she can get an even footing underneath.

"I think the key for her is just that she gets ground that is okay for her and she doesn't lose her confidence on it, in which case she'll be pretty competitive," he said.
